This tracer has many uses
The Amprobe AT-2004 Advanced Wire Tracer is a versatile tool., with clear instructions inside the case .I was able to easily trace a residential undergound branch circuit while energized. It was also used to trace a residental undergound natural gas line that had a copper conductor tracer.
Tracing of commercial branch circuits installed in raceways to locate source breaker can be accomplished after a little practice to discern signal strength and receiver settings. A short learning curve here, as always with new instruments.
The instrument was used effectively in a training session with experienced electricians to locate open and grounded conctuctors.

Purchased in 1997, still using, outlasted most of my men who could break anything.
I needed a tracer to locate underground PVC enclosed service cables. There was very little allowance for error due to close proximity of gas and communication lines. Needless to say now, I found the service lines without damaging other close conduits.
That project itself paid for the tracer. Since than I have employed the tracer ( live and dead circuits) at least once a week. It never fails to render excellent results.
We had a project to install separate meters for a 1100 unit apartment project. In each of 50 buildings the units were served from a panel with 60/2 mains for each unit. We had to do the tracing live without disturbing the tenants. Out of the 1100 units I made 2 errors which I admit were my mistakes.
In finishing this effort to win an Amprobe product, before I purchased the AT-2004 I tried competitors products, they did not come close at twice the price. Of course, I could have paid a great deal more for one that equaled Amprobe, but what for.

Great diagnostic tool
I had a CT-100 that I used for some time but needed the extra features offered by the AT-2004 kit. I finally broke down and bought one. This is one of the very best buys I have made. It has allowed me to locate breaks and shorts in wires as well as trace wires in walls to locate. I have even used it to locate buried wires in conduit at a depth of 5+ feet. This surprised the other electrician and myself and further sold me on the utility of this kit and the wisdom of the purchase! I run one of the service trucks and use this at least once a week if not more. It saves me time and the customer money. It is also conformation that the customer has hired a professional and not just a hack. Get this tool and learn how to use it, you will not be sorry.
